Mishler Theatre

1208 12th Avenue

The Mishler Theatre is located at 1208 12th Avenue, next to the Blair County Arts Foundation. Built in 1902-06, by Albert E. Westover for I.C. Mishler, the theatre was the first venue for live entertainment in the city of Altoona. It was converted to a movie theatre in 1931, and sold in 1965 to the Blair County Arts Foundation. Since 1965, live performances have been held in the theatre.

The exterior of the Mishler is an example of Beaux-Arts limestone, with the interior in more ornate Baroque. The first story of the building is clad in limestone, with the rest of the building done in brick. One of the most interesting features of the theatre’s ornamentation is the pair of statues above the entrance. On the left is Melpomene, Muse of Tragedy and on the right is Terpsichore, Muse of Dance. Private of the theatre can be arranged by calling 814.949.ARTS.
