After-School Program

Juniata United Methodist Church invites all children in grades K-6 to “Break-Away” for a FREE weekly afterschool program on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Join us for snacks, music, crafts, homework help, games, and bible lessons.

Autism Support Group
Easter Seals Central Pennsylvania is now offering an Autism Support Group. Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month at 6:00pm at the Easter Seals building on 501 Valley View Blvd. Altoona, in their newly opened Autism Resource Center.

Book Club
This fun and relaxing club meets once a month at the Hollidaysburg YMCA to discuss the books plot, characters, themes and appeal. Attend each month or occasionally as your schedule allows.

Come join the Hollidaysburg YMCA’s chef, Stephanie Campbell to learn how to make a delicious recipe you can share with your family and friends. Each month there will be a different theme.

Allegheny Ballet offers individuals of all ages the best in dance training. From beginning boys and girls through advanced men and women, the school provides carefully structured classes in progressive levels of achievement. The school faculty places strong emphasis on individual attention and corrections.

Gamblers Anonymous Weekly Meetings
Location: Altoona VA Medical Center: 2907 Pleasant Valley Blvd., 2nd. floor classroom.
If you have or think you might have a compulsive gambling problem, there is now local help available. A local chapter of Gamblers Anonymous will begin weekly meetings on Mondays at 7:00 P.M.

Gardening Classes (Master Gardener Library Series)
August 23 at 6:30 PM ~ Master Gardener Alan Imler at the Altoona Area Public Library Theatre. Come and Learn about “Selecting Pollinator Plants for Your garden.” Discover annuals, perennials, and shrubs that attract pollinating insects and animals to your garden.
September 27 at 6:30 PM ~ Master Gardener Mary Bolt at the Altoona Area Public Library Theatre. Come and Learn about “Planting Seeds with Children.” Children come with your parents and enjoy a planting good time and go home with something to grow!
October 25 at 6:30 PM ~ Master Gardener Jackie Forsht at the Altoona Area Public Library Theatre. “Has Your Yard Gone to the Dogs?” Learn how to discourage, disguise , or fix damage done to your yard and garden by your canine friend. Learn what plants affect your pet’s health and safety. Be Introduced to products that are helpful for pet owners.
November 22 at 6:30 PM (Pre-registration for this class is necessary. Please call 946-0417 Ext. 137 by November 15 in order to register.)~ Master Gardener Tom Garman at the Altoona Area Public Library. “Fresh Green Arrangement for the Holiday Season.” Take home a fresh Christmas arrangement befitting any Christmas table. There will be a $15.00 charge for wreath making items. Space is limited to only 15 participants.

GED Classes
Location: Evergreen Manors
The Community Education Center will provide GED Classes every Friday (beginning Friday, October 23rd at 1:00 PM) at the Evergreen Manors’ Supportive Services Office. All books and classes are free and open to the public.

Writing Seminar
Learn how to get those creative juices flowing and unlock your hidden inner talent.
This writing seminar will focus more on the art of writing and creative thinking than the rules of grammar, spelling or structure. If you are interested in improving your writing skills for professional use, have a desire to become a published writer or simply want to record your family history this seminar has something for you.
All experience levels are encouraged to participate in this unique opportunity to improve skills while feeding their true passion for the art of writing.

John is Business Editor and contributor for a leading international trade publication. His work appears in a variety of publications on a regular basis. With 25 years experience as a photo journalist John will openly share his tips on creative writing as well as the secrets of marketing your work.
This creative writing seminar will be presented on April 8th from 7 to 9 pm and is open to anyone interested in improving their written communication skills.
